Virtues and Benefits of Surah Al-Mulk

Surah Al-Mulk is one of the few surahs with an authentic hadith about its own virtue. Here are the 2 reports this plan is built on, with what they mean.

It Intercedes for Its Companion Until He Is Forgiven

“A surah of the Quran containing 30 verses will intercede for its companion until he is forgiven. It is: Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1400, graded hasan by al-Albani; also Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2891, where al-Tirmidhi grades it hasan)

The Prophet ﷺ describes Surah Al-Mulk by its number of verses, then names it, so there is no doubt which surah he means. Its “companion” (sahib) is the person who kept company with it: someone who recited it often, not someone who read it once.

The reward is great: the surah itself will speak on his behalf until Allah forgives him. That is why a steady plan matters more than a fast one. The goal is a surah you will keep reciting for life.

It Is the Protector From the Punishment of the Grave

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: “Whoever recites Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk every night, Allah will protect him by it from the punishment of the grave. In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it al-Mani’ah (the protector).” (al-Nasa’i, al-Sunan al-Kubra 10479; graded hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib 1475)

These are the words of a Companion, and he tells us how the Companions named the surah in the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime: al-Mani’ah, the one that protects. Notice the condition: every night. The protection is linked to a lasting habit, not to a single reading.

What You Gain by Memorizing It

  • You can recite it every night, anywhere: in bed, in night prayer, or on a walk, without a Mushaf. That is the habit both reports describe.
  • You have a full surah for your prayers. Its 30 verses fit well into night prayer, split over 2 rakahs or recited in 1.
  • You carry its meanings with you: Allah’s dominion over everything, the flawless creation you are invited to look at twice (67:3–4), and trust in Him: قُلْ هُوَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ آمَنَّا بِهِ وَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا (67:29).

A Surah Mulk memorization plan turns these virtues into something you can actually keep: a few verses a day, then 1 nightly recitation for life.

Surah Mulk Divided Into 6 Verse Groups

Every good Surah Mulk memorization plan starts with meaning, not with page breaks. Each group below tells 1 part of the story, so the verses link together naturally.

Group Verses What the verses are about First words
1 1–5 Allah’s dominion and His flawless creation of the heavens
2 6–11 Hellfire and the confession of those who denied
3 12–14 The reward of those who fear their Lord unseen
4 15–19 The earth made easy for you, a warning, and the birds
5 20–24 Who else can help you or provide for you?
6 25–30 The promised Day, and the water you depend on

Read a short translation of each group before you start it. When you know what a verse is saying, you remember which verse comes next.

How to Memorize Surah Mulk Fast?

If you have memorized other surahs before, you can go faster: 1 verse group a day for 6 days, then a full review on day 7. That is 3 to 6 verses a day, so expect about 40 minutes daily.

Fast only works if the earlier groups stay firm. To memorize Surah Mulk fast without losing it:

  • Learn in the morning, review at night. A second session the same day locks the new verses in.
  • Use the same reciter every time. Your ear learns the rhythm, which helps you recall the words.
  • Stay with 1 Mushaf. Your eyes remember where each verse sits on the page.
  • Stop when the old groups slip. If yesterday’s group is shaky, review instead of adding a new one.

For more ways to speed up without cutting corners, see our guide on how to memorize Quran fast.

A Daily Routine for Each New Verse

This is how to memorize Surah Mulk verse by verse. Whichever plan you follow, use the same 5 steps for every new verse:

  1. Listen to the verse 3 times while following the text.
  2. Read the meaning in a translation you understand.
  3. Repeat the verse from the Mushaf until it flows, then close the Mushaf and recite it 5 times from memory.
  4. Link it to the verse before: recite both together without stopping.
  5. Use it in your next prayer, so you recite it under real conditions.

This is a version of the repeat-and-link method many teachers use. You can compare it with other approaches in our list of Quran memorization techniques.

A simple trick: write the word that changes on a small card, and test yourself on each set before you recite the full surah. The Surah Mulk memorization plan PDF has all 11 sets on its own page.

How to Keep Surah Mulk After You Memorize It?

Finishing your Surah Mulk memorization plan is the start, not the end. The Ibn Mas’ud report speaks of reciting the surah every night, and that habit is also the best revision you can have.

  • Every night: recite all 30 verses from memory, in bed or in night prayer.
  • Once a week: recite it while someone follows in the Mushaf, to catch silent mistakes.
  • When a verse slips: go back to the group table, read the meaning, and repeat that group for 2 days.

If you are memorizing more surahs alongside Al-Mulk, our guide on how to revise Quran quickly shows how to fit everything into a weekly cycle.

Memorizing Surah Mulk as an Adult

Adults often know Surah Mulk by sound but stumble when they try to recite it alone. The fix is usually not more repetition, but 1 person who listens and corrects.

A teacher hears the small slips you cannot hear yourself: a missing letter, a wrong vowel, or verse 21 starting where verse 20 should. A teacher can also turn this Surah Mulk memorization plan into weekly targets. Our online Quran classes for adults are scheduled around work and family, so a short lesson a few times a week is enough to keep a plan like this on track.

Conclusion: Your Surah Mulk Memorization Plan

A Surah Mulk memorization plan works when it is small and steady. Split the 30 verses into 6 groups, pick the 30-day or 14-day schedule, recite yesterday’s verses before today’s, and learn the similar verses side by side. Once you finish, recite it every night: that keeps it in your memory and keeps you close to the reward described in the hadith.
